I thought I’d share a little secret today…my other half’s nickname for me…but first, I will explain why he calls me this! As some of you know, I have PCOS and this, combined with the fact that I have thick dark hair, means that I am a little hirsute – or hairy – damn hormones!! Luckily, most of this lovely hair is on my head, although a little is on my upper lip and I have a few rogue dark beard hairs. In order to keep these in check, I either use wax strips, cream, or my trusted Tweezerman…these are especially good for precision chin hair plucking 😉 After being together for a while, my other half walked in on me in the bathroom, mid pluck – and he burst out laughing. I was mortified, but quickly got over it – he has some undesirable habits too, and at least my plucking was for a reason! However, I later caught him humming the theme tune to an early 90’s animated classic – Bucky O’Hare…a crime fighting green hare – and I was quickly christened ‘Plucky O’Hare’! I am not offended in the slightest and fall about laughing when I hear him singing ‘Plucky, Captain Plucky O’Hare. Mutants and aliens and toads beware!’ and so it continues.
Imagine his delight when he caught me using facial hair removal cream on my moustache…good God, it all started again and I was christened ‘Mario’! This is all very traumatic for a girl! Luckily, I find it amusing and can laugh at my hairy tendencies…I just have a good relationship with Boots and their hair removal products! 😉
Anyway, ‘Weekend Woes’. I don’t know why, but weekends are just weird for me now. I suppose it is because I am taking a break from the world of work to get myself sorted. I used to look forward to the weekend…I would get to Wednesday and know it was on its way. That sounds sad – I know – and makes it sound like all I focused on was the weekend. But when you end up with a boss like I did, the weekends are such a respite. And before this period of my life, were my ‘wild nights’ and I bloody loved them. So I definitely lived for the weekend…in fact, they used to start on Thursday nights, when I could be found vigorously shaking my substantial buttocks around on the podium at ‘the’ venue in town! So now I am not working it feels as if my weekend excitement has been taken away from me – and yes, for those of you rolling your eyes, I know that I have chosen to do this…I am not looking for sympathy – or shouts of “get a job” – I am just saying that life changes and it is a bit weird!
Perhaps, I think, it’s just this drawn-out Winter that is getting to me. My family are a lovely bunch and we have regular get togethers at the stables throughout the Summer…but there is no sign of them when the weather is bad! The same can be said for friends too I suppose. Plus, a lot of my friends have moved away from the area and have their children to raise, so I guess it’s just the perils of getting older! Goodness – proper ‘poor me’ stuff. I am as guilty as everyone else though of hiding away during the Winter months. I get the horses sorted and then get home as soon as I can so that I can warm up! So I have decided to make more of an effort, and caught up with an old colleague a few days ago on the phone…and arranged a get together after Easter weekend. I WILL become a social animal again!
Something that did cheer me up this week was having a de-clutter of the kitchen. I think this is particularly useful for those of us trying to lose weight for a few reasons. My other half and I took the opportunity to get rid of loads of bits and bobs we haven’t used for ages, or that were broken. We got rid of Tupperware boxes that we couldn’t find lids for, chipped and cracked cups and plates, odd cutlery, old cardboard rolls that seem to accumulate in the foil and cling film drawer – as my other half is a nightmare for not throwing stuff like this away…I will often think we have a food item in, but then I check it and it’s an empty packet! We cleaned the under stairs cupboard too, which is in the kitchen, and found all sorts of stuff in there that we longer need or use. The very tops of the cupboards were also cleaned off and de-cluttered, and everything now has it’s place. It feels so much better in there – cleaner, airy, brighter – and we can actually find the things that we need now. And in a strange way, it lifted my mood.
I think a cluttered house can be depressing. You only have to watch those TV programmes about cluttered houses – or hoarders – to see how much happier people are when it has been cleared.
It was also really helpful to me, when I first started Slimming World again, to get rid of trigger foods – the things I used to binge on and crave, and to move food out of sight. So no posh jars with food on display on the work surfaces – it was all put away in the cupboards…kind of worked as it was a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ in most instances. The same used to be the case at work for me – I would move the tin of sweets over to the other side of the office, or the cakes, or whatever wonderfully thoughtful delight some – generally waif-like – individual had decided to ‘treat’ us too. Along with this de-cluttering and moving temptation away, I found packing little snacks helpful, and my bottom drawer at work used to have a pack of HiFi bars, and a couple of Mugshots in it, so that if I did get tempted I could just have that instead and stay in control.
Anyway, back to the de-cluttering. We also took a close look at the food in the cupboards…and found a packet of savoury rice with an expiry date in 2011, and bag of flour with weevils in – these little bugs are often found in packets of open dry foods including nuts and seeds, cereal and grain products. There was a jar of honey from 2008, and a couple of slices of bread hiding right at the back of a cupboard that could well and truly qualify for a science experiment. Now, we aren’t trogs – we just don’t often have a cupboard overhaul…so we have planned to use everything that is left, over the next few weeks, and then restock with the stuff we use regularly.
Right – I’ll stop my moaning and get onto the usuals then…
The dog had been well behaved in the night but was just mooching around, which kept waking me up, and I also ended up wide awake way before the alarm was due to go off. But, I stayed in my cocoon anyway as it was cold and snowy outside! However, the horses must be attended to regardless of the weather, so I dragged myself out of bed and got my backside into gear. The neddies love the snow, so they were quite happy to be out with their big piles of hay to munch on. It actually looks quite scenic with the snow, rather than the big muddy mess that it usually is during the Winter at the stables, so it was quite a pleasant morning. I hadn’t decided on what ‘day’ I was having – Green, Extra Easy or Original – so we had this conversation in the car park at Asda and I settled on Green, and my lovely other half popped in and bought today’s supplies. We then had to go and pay a cheque into the bank…which makes a nice change as it’s usually money going out, rather than going in. It was then home for the afternoon; he wanted a lazy day after a stressful week of work, so there wasn’t much happening in the WLB household today! I did the usual Facebook, Twitter, Blog and now Hang w/ stuff – and hoped to watch a good film on TV later. On that note – Challenger – catch it on BBC iPlayer if you can…it was on BBC2 last Monday – and was brilliant to watch. Based on the true story of the investigation into the shuttle disaster in the early 80s – really interesting!
Lunch: Noodles and stir fry veggies – I deleted the lovely picture accidentally…but this is what I had!
Dinner: Linda Mc sausages, syn free chips, baked beans, fried tomatoes, onions and mushrooms.
Snacks: Two pizza toasties.
Brekkie was just a quick grab and go affair so that I could take my tablets! Once the Green day had been decided, it was noodle stir fry for lunch – which tasted lovely, and was so simple. It was just a packet of low fat chicken Supernoodles and a box of Asda’s water chestnut and bamboo shoot stir fry veggies – cooked separately and mixed together before serving…syn free, quick, delicious and filling! Dinner was an old favourite and was again really nice. A craving for pizza was dealt with using my healthy extras…two lovely pizza toasties using my two HEA and two HEB choices, plus some tomato purée, garlic and herbs…wonderful…and this ‘diet’ isn’t a bloody diet – Slimming World is marvellous!
Exercise: 15 minutes Boxercise, 15 minutes Dancercise, 15 minutes Sit-ups – 45 minutes in total.
Another good exercise day. I am still easing myself into it at the moment, as this cold / cough is lingering…so I am not going all out with the more intense exercise, but what I am doing is raising my heart rate enough, making me sweaty and leaving me moderately breathless! 😉 And, according to my Body Magic book, this is what it is all about…so I am happy, but still can’t wait to get fit enough to go to the gym and start some proper classes. Also, my cousin is a Mixed Martial Arts specialist and teacher, so I am hoping to go to his gym at some point and learn a bit more about that…my quest to become Lara Croft is in the planning…haha…I bet Angelina isn’t worried in the slightest.
Hoping that you are all enjoying the weekend – hundreds of hugs and heaps of happiness!
