…to the gym! Woohoo! I am now officially a gym-goer…although I am sure one session doesn’t cut it with the hardcore amongst you! 😉
I am still in some kind of shock I suppose that I made it really. This morning I caught sight of my original BMI – which was 95.1 when I weighed 43st 5.5lbs – it just reminded me of how far I have come. Incidentally my BMI is now 58.5 which is still classed as ‘super obese’ and is pretty bloody serious, but it is a far cry from the beginning. Progress is most definitely being made – and sorry to harp on, but it is being made without any dangerous pills, shakes, lotions, potions or surgery – it can be done with real, tasty food!
This morning saw me working on my other half’s projects for a few hours before heading off to see the horses. They were all fine – apart from flooding in the field – and were happy to see the hay thrown over the fence for them…roll on this weekends move to the winter field. We then popped to Asda for some supplies before making our way to the gym.
I have to admit to sitting in the car park for a while people-watching. Partly due to the fact that I had arrived far too early for the induction, but partly because I wanted to suss the place out…or the people. There were lots of men – all quite fit and healthy looking, and some women who were also quite fit and healthy looking. However, I reminded myself that they too could have been blimps before they joined! 😉 So I just walked in with my head held high(ish!)
My other half was with me – he works from home and so we decided that it would be good for us both to get out and about. Plus, he gave up a very active job and is now pretty much a couch potato with a junk food habit – albeit rather annoyingly he remains a healthy weight! We went upstairs to the gym – yep, stairs…I couldn’t have done that this time last year 😉 – and I then showed him how to use the cross trainer. After a five minute warm-up we had our induction.
If I am being honest, it was a bit pants. More just a case of showing us how to use the machines – which is good, but I had hoped for a little more. We have booked in for a programme review on Wednesday though, so this should handle that bit.
Given that my aim is both cardiovascular fitness along with strength and toning, I wimped out and went for the strength and toning work which I find easier! I will be doing CV work, but it is likely to be swimming based initially along with bits of cross trainer and treadmill. I just get such a buzz from lifting weights and wanted that feel-good vibe on day one. My focus will be on the static weights first to build up, before moving onto free weights with some ‘explosive’ movement…exciting!
The biggest challenge for me was my arse and getting it on some of the machines! In fact, my arse wasn’t actually a real issue…my poor tummy was though…and it got squashed in the thigh machine. Every time I bought my legs together, my poor tummy got in the way – so I squeezed and lifted my way through that one…I guess it will an interesting was of measuring progress! 🙂 I must point out that I wore black leggings rather than light grey joggers…so my error on the thigh machine will not be repeated! 🙂
I had a go on nearly every machine there – bar two that were just beyond me at the moment involving pull ups! Most of them were familiar from my old gym-going days and bought back those feelings of wellness…oh, who am I kidding? Wellness?! They made me feel kick-ass and Lara Croft…just the feeling I wanted!
My biggest issue is getting over myself I think. In some cases I had selected weights that were too heavy…but my ego was in the way and so I pushed and pulled for all I was worth…instead of being sensible and moving the weight pin. I am sure that I will regret it tomorrow!
So the upshot is that I really enjoyed myself. There was also additional eye-candy…my other half being the main man…but there was a chap doing pull ups / chin ups and I was amazed. Less so with the fact that he clearly loved the mirrors, but moreso with the fact that he could do pull ups…it is my dream to do these…watch this space! 😉
The only downside of the gym is that I am going to have to part with Terry Treadmill…
I am calling it a night now as my arms are floppy like spaghetti and my eyes are still getting used to these specs.
Breakfast: Yogurt and fruit.
A nice start to the day – gorgeous crisp grapes with raspberries and banana…not so sure about the overly sweet Activia though – reckon I will mainly be sticking to my 0% Total Greek stuff! Lunch was just grabbed quickly before the gym. Dinner was the Linda Mc sausages wrapped in bacon and grilled, whilst I rustled up scrambled eggs with spring onion and LowLow, along with some fried onion, mushroom, tomato and spinach – it was lush…thank you David for the tip about the sausages…my other half was most grateful! 😉
Exercise: 5 minutes cross trainer and 30 minutes of weights – finally, I have something decent to write in this section! 😉
