Flipping heck it’s a bit windy today…Mr WLB has been blown off…
We decided to stay close to base camp today due to the storm. As the cottage is right next to the sea, and the coastal areas up here are supposed to be most affected, we thought it wise not to venture too far.
However after a couple of hours of nothingness I got bored. Whilst I adore this place and could quite happily live here, it seemed wrong to waste the opportunity of exploring when I will be back to reality and home again in November. I decided that it couldn’t hurt to go down the road for a bit of a walk. I could see the storm whipping up some sea spray and wanted to blow away some cobwebs. So I donned my waterproof jacket – which I now know isn’t very fecking waterproof…dreaming of the day I’ll fit into a Berghaus! – and stuck my fleece in my backpack, and headed off up the road. Mr WLB and the dog wanted to join me too. He has some new windproof and waterproof gloves that he wanted to road test.
They got tested!
We set off in sunshine. We then had wind – lots of wind that almost blew me over and I was leaning into it to walk…and almost fell over when it suddenly stopped as I was leaning so much! We then got some sleet. We had horizontal rain. We got sea spray. We got slapped in the face by wet bits of bracken flying off the hills. The dog was happy. Mr WLB less so.
Then the hail started. It’s a fecker. It stings you through your clothes. And then the wind started with the hail so it was coming at us sideways…stinging our faces and legs. The dog decided it would be best to huddle…so we huddled for a few minutes.
After 45 cold, wet, and windy minutes we called it a day!
I hit the gym instead but decided upon a nice warming Pilates session as I am aching after my weights day yesterday. Mr WLB headed home to eat junk food and to give the dog a blow dry with the hairdryer!
I managed to a get a few pictures…but I just cannot do the scenery and imagery around here justice!
It’s an amazing place. So amazing…I am getting distracted in my blog writing efforts…I have just seen a couple of stags have a bit of a to-do over a deer and her fawn…and am now watching the original family group reunite on the hill just outside the window. They are a bit too far out of range for me to take a picture on the iPhone to share, but it’s fabulous being able to see them so close – and the noises they make are immense! I am so pleased that I can get out and about to witness this sort of thing…at 43st 5.5lbs it would have been impossible.
Anyway. More seafood has been eaten today. More planning has been done for the rest of the holiday. It’s been lovely and relaxing…just what I needed – just what we all need every now and again. It’s got nothing to do with being selfish, and everything to do with self-care!
I am off do to even more relaxing now and to get through a little bit more of the Dan Ariely book I am reading – he’s a behavioural economist that I have studied with and is such an interesting chap.
Today’s food looked like this…
Breakfast: Pickled herring, squid, and crab with wilted spinach and baby plum tomatoes…yes, Mr WLB continues to be horrified with my seafood concoctions!
Lunch: Jacket potato, baked beans, cottage cheese, salad, and grapes.
Dinner: Smoked chicken, mushroom, and butternut squash risotto with tenderstem broccoli, asparagus, and green beans.
Snacks: Almond milk (HEA), nuts (HEB), a banana, and dark choc (15 syns).
Exercise: 45 minute storm walk and 60 minutes Pilates.
